Do I Have To Be Nice

Posted on May 3, 2024May 3, 2024 by Pam

We are supposed to show care and spread joy. I thought I was doing that today but it ended feeling like a sucker punch. My fault was in not following directions. Jesus is clear in these points – that are not parables. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind”. Next is, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. For my neighbor sometimes I guess what they want or need. I need to be nice and give something needed. Do I have to be nice and make it about them? You know how, at Christmas, you sometimes purchase a gift for someone dear that you think they will like because you like it. That is a well-meaning guess. Sometimes they want something else. A few years ago I lost a dear friend, Sue, to cancer. Once discovered it went fast. I visited often but at our last visit she just rolled over in bed. With her back to me I knew this was our last visit and she needed me to say goodbye. She no longer needed me to visit but I wanted to be there. My bad. I want to rid the world of cancer, strokes, and the like. I have no power to solve these things so I sometimes guess wrong. I remember a call from a good friend a week after giving birth to my firstborn. All day, Saturday, the visits had come. They were so appreciated but I was tired and asked them to come another time. I hurt them but I needed rest to be a good new Mom. Today I needed to remember that I humbly love and encourage people the way God directs and in ways they need. I saw a phrase today, ‘unnamed ache’. How we ache to love God and our people in unfoolish ways. We don’t want a ‘copy, echo, or mirage’ (another phrase I saw today) of true love for our neighbors. They deserve God-like and not Pam-like love.

"Thoughts from a genuinely evaluative mind."

Pam writes so that must make her a writer. Recently retired, she can now fill days with family, friends, missions, writing, creating, and showing up for whomever needs her. Pam loves the Lord and people. The Bible is God’s love letter to us (and who does not need more love) so she studies and writes some more.

Pam lives in the Pacific Northwest but was home-grown in Southern California. She attended San Jose Bible College and finished a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at UCLA. She became a teacher, then a Research and Development Chemist, then she built two successful real estate businesses in two states. Pam also pursued study at Fuller Theological Seminary and just completed six months serving in missions abroad.

Pam has two amazing children, married to two precious in-laws, and five sweet grandchildren. Pam is a gifted connector and communicator and the Northwest has the perfect climate for staying inside and writing – or baking! She has been writing since a wee one and is currently converting many years of blogging, by topic, into ten books. The first is a collection from 2011 titled, Beautiful Enough. The second is a yearly day-timer titled, Weekly Planner - Lessons in Life, Glory, and Grace. Number three is in progress with the working title, Christmas Today.

Ten facts about Pam in no particular order:

  1. On the team that developed an insulation for the Alaskan oil pipeline.
  2. Loves looking at homes, decorating, and has flipped five homes.
  3. Likes being tall.
  4. Films have helped define her vocabulary.
  5. Comes from Colorado tenement farmers with history traced to Wales.
  6. Was lost but now is found.
  7. Baking makes her happy – as does eating sweets with coffee, of course.
  8. She thinks mission work is the most important work in the world.
  9. The church started in Rome so she is learning Italian.
  10. Pam is a work in progress!
