I’m Off Script

Posted on November 12, 2024November 12, 2024 by Pam

I read this phrase in a book about transitions in cross-cultural ministry. It really applies to anyone who is not as conventional as the average. You look to your right, then your left, and you are doing different stuff. I’ve done a lot of normal stuff and am very grateful for a nice family, great education, marriage (that led to a benefit) of the best children/grandchildren I could ever dream of. I’ve had three careers and traveled but not with a focus on travel. That is the surprise for even me that I’m off script. God said to Abraham, “Go from your country, your people, and your father’s household to the land I will show you”. God has not spoken that specifically to me but He has opened doors and we all have the ‘go’ message. Scripture interprets scripture. My work was provision but not really life-giving. My family is doing family as I did at their age. I love serving. I don’t love achey legs, crowded trams with slippery floors, and bitter cold – again. This is like a joke all in one year, 114 degrees serving earlier this year and now freezing. I want to take a hot bubble bath and I will do that sometime but not today. I will never be in a place where my passport country is not my home country because I am serving – but not 100%. My reason is a late start at doing what I’ve loved since age 19. Maybe it is like writing a postcard to you. I’m here, I did that, and will see you soon! We each have a unique path. C.S. Lewis said in Pilgrims Regress, “Be sure it is not for nothing that the LandLord has knit our heart so closely to time and place – to one friend rather than another and one shrine more than all the land”. Prague is amazing but was never on any bucket list yet here I am because of people I know. Is this really the script God has for me today? Did I hear correctly? What is He planning next for you?

Good questions for you if you are considering missions travel and service from Amy Young in her excellent book, Looming Transitions. Paraphrased, 1) Have you been to the country you are considering to see how people live?, 2) Are you clear on the tasks you will be asked to do?, 3) What does your current stage in life look like?, 4) How long is the commitment?, and 5) Does your family support you emotionally and spiritually in this possible service abroad?

Looking lost again

"Thoughts from a genuinely evaluative mind."

Pam writes so that must make her a writer. Recently retired, she can now fill days with family, friends, missions, writing, creating, and showing up for whomever needs her. Pam loves the Lord and people. The Bible is God’s love letter to us (and who does not need more love) so she studies and writes some more.

Pam lives in the Pacific Northwest but was home-grown in Southern California. She attended San Jose Bible College and finished a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at UCLA. She became a teacher, then a Research and Development Chemist, then she built two successful real estate businesses in two states. Pam also pursued study at Fuller Theological Seminary and just completed six months serving in missions abroad.

Pam has two amazing children, married to two precious in-laws, and five sweet grandchildren. Pam is a gifted connector and communicator and the Northwest has the perfect climate for staying inside and writing – or baking! She has been writing since a wee one and is currently converting many years of blogging, by topic, into ten books. The first is a collection from 2011 titled, Beautiful Enough. The second is a yearly day-timer titled, Weekly Planner - Lessons in Life, Glory, and Grace. Number three is in progress with the working title, Christmas Today.

Ten facts about Pam in no particular order:

  1. On the team that developed an insulation for the Alaskan oil pipeline.
  2. Loves looking at homes, decorating, and has flipped five homes.
  3. Likes being tall.
  4. Films have helped define her vocabulary.
  5. Comes from Colorado tenement farmers with history traced to Wales.
  6. Was lost but now is found.
  7. Baking makes her happy – as does eating sweets with coffee, of course.
  8. She thinks mission work is the most important work in the world.
  9. The church started in Rome so she is learning Italian.
  10. Pam is a work in progress!
