Ran across the funniest article today on which words should be left behind in 2024. They are cringe, game changer (I agree – so sick of that one), era, dropped, IYKYK, sorry not sorry, skibidi, 100%, utilize, and period. Here are some of the reasons provided by Lake Superior State University on 1/1/25. This is a little bit like the fashion pages that say what is “in” and what is “out”. I guess cringe once packed a punch but has a dulled impact. Taylor Swift has overused the word era. I like the word dropped because my daughter uses that in her business. Dropped is used instead of introduced so let’s return to introduced. IYKYK (if you know, you know) offers little substance or clarity. I think it’s snobby. Sorry not sorry is self-explanatory as a half-hearted apology, only worse than sarcasm. What in the world is skibidi? No one seems to know except the internet mentions a toilet? I happen to like 100% of anything. I’m all in. They call utilize a classic offender. Since when does ‘use’ not do the job? Period is often used to shut the other person up to win an argument. Then the university invites us to enter our own suggestions. Speaking of leaving things behind, we crossed the 2024 finish line and I, too, am hopeful to just bring what is useful and to look on what is truly beautiful and adds value to the lives of those around me.
