St Augustine said of the two testaments, “The new is in the old concealed, the old is in the new revealed.” We need both and need to read both. I have always favored the new because it is a story where the old seems to be complicated with many stores but, in combination, tell of the coming salvation through Jesus. There are characters of every kind and major story lines. In summary, God is Triune, He created us in His image, the Fall happened, God covenants with Abraham, Jesus is born, His church is born, and then Jesus returns and we are a new Creation. Boom – if you believe. The world is missing this truth and I think I know why. Either you are on the throne of your heart or Jesus is. That is what John the Baptist, Jesus’s cousin, spoke about in John 3:30-31, “He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth.” That is a pretty good description of me and maybe you too. I think about myself a lot – like most of the time. That is lame in view of the entire universe being created by God so that we exist and then can choose who sits on the throne of our hearts. That is one way to describe the fall. The world has a brand of significance that is very different from the simple truth. I sound like I am preaching but I want the truth to get out. No more lying that the right house, car, mate, job, bright kids, or hefty retirement can compare. Some of that temporary may come but don’t count on it staying. Back to Jesus and John, they both died because of evil. Follow the evidence.
