FAILED CATHOLIC?
I have been using this phrase lately. I did not invent it but also don’t hear it much. For me, it describes some wonderful people I know who visited “religion” during their childhood but don’t think it is important to follow Jesus to the ‘T’. I think we can use the same idea for Protestants, Muslims, Hindus, animists, etc. Some experience knowledge but not faith. It is a list of should and should-nots without heart. Catholics have had more years at the helm of the universal church to confuse people. The truth is missing meaning. How can you study Jesus and not see grace and forgiveness? What motivates some to believe and not others? Who gives up on Jesus and why? I would guess that, in some cases, Jesus sounds too good to be true because they heard a lot about the rules and not the grace part. Our story is our story with no story like yours. Is there apostasy? When did the Catholic church go from teaching the right stuff to focusing on the wrong stuff? My guess is years and it is getting worse. The Bible says nothing about not eating meat on Friday. Are there any Joan of Arch’s today? So much has been wrong throughout history and things morph in 2000 years. No politics can fix your heart but only God can. The old WWJD makes so much sense to me now – what would Jesus do? Read what Jesus said and do more of that. Forget the nasty nun waving the ruler at you. Be drawn to Jesus. Peter walked on water in His presence. Don’t trust yourself.
