Second Best

Posted on October 20, 2024October 21, 2024 by Pam

I’m asking God for something better but really went sideways with a bus diversion. What is it this time? I passed the stop from last week and trusted the app. I noticed the interesting bakery from last week – hey – a landmark is a landmark! When I hopped off the recommended stop it said 12 minutes to church. Awesome. After walking over a mile, and the time remaining was not diminished by much, I realized that Google maps thought I was a car. After walking 3-4 miles, and not trusting the bus, I gave up the ghost. I really wanted to be in church. I met some lovely believers last week and was so looking forward to more of that so what is the something better? The plan, so far, was a stop at that new-to-me bakery – so much for a slimmer version of me. Because I love coffee and am using instant decaf, it was disappointing to get a small machine produced coffee in a paper cup, you know the kind they have in warehouses for their employees (I’ve worked in those places). This is not the something better. I’m back at the boarding house and have two scheduled family calls later and time to write! When working, Monday was always my fav day as a planning day. Please do lock me in my office and make me plan and catch up on paper work! I was so disciplined that, after two years of retirement, I still do many of the same things. There is joy in serving Jesus but a day of rest, on-line church (first for our new pastor at CHCC – Koby Orr), an unnecessary bakery stop, and maybe another decaf coffee plus an on-line movie is second best? It is my fault and user error but I hope God will help redeem the time. “Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home…I looked over Jordan and what did I see…A band of angels coming after me…Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home. Swing low”. I’m homesick still but this unexpected day of solitude is a gentle reminder that God is over time, redeems time, knows my time, controls my time, and can make it something better, even when there is user-error. Thank you, Lord, for keeping me company today and someday it will be for good.

At the notorious bus stop.

"Thoughts from a genuinely evaluative mind."

Pam writes so that must make her a writer. Recently retired, she can now fill days with family, friends, missions, writing, creating, and showing up for whomever needs her. Pam loves the Lord and people. The Bible is God’s love letter to us (and who does not need more love) so she studies and writes some more.

Pam lives in the Pacific Northwest but was home-grown in Southern California. She attended San Jose Bible College and finished a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at UCLA. She became a teacher, then a Research and Development Chemist, then she built two successful real estate businesses in two states. Pam also pursued study at Fuller Theological Seminary and just completed six months serving in missions abroad.

Pam has two amazing children, married to two precious in-laws, and five sweet grandchildren. Pam is a gifted connector and communicator and the Northwest has the perfect climate for staying inside and writing – or baking! She has been writing since a wee one and is currently converting many years of blogging, by topic, into ten books. The first is a collection from 2011 titled, Beautiful Enough. The second is a yearly day-timer titled, Weekly Planner - Lessons in Life, Glory, and Grace. Number three is in progress with the working title, Christmas Today.

Ten facts about Pam in no particular order:

  1. On the team that developed an insulation for the Alaskan oil pipeline.
  2. Loves looking at homes, decorating, and has flipped five homes.
  3. Likes being tall.
  4. Films have helped define her vocabulary.
  5. Comes from Colorado tenement farmers with history traced to Wales.
  6. Was lost but now is found.
  7. Baking makes her happy – as does eating sweets with coffee, of course.
  8. She thinks mission work is the most important work in the world.
  9. The church started in Rome so she is learning Italian.
  10. Pam is a work in progress!
