Oh Seattle, Seattle. Matthew 23:37 says, “Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” It is easy to believe we are special and deserve wealth and comfort. It is selfish but easy. The radio ad for a new real estate community (elevated lifestyle) is appealing to our need to be pampered and special. Seattle is statistically far from God. There is no traffic on a Sunday morning. If covid were still threatening us or we knew the timing of Jesus return, the traffic might be heavy because we need to be saved and we have heard that is Jesus’ specialty. If we can do everything without God then He will always be a backup plan and not the love of our lives. The elevated lifestyle we don’t deserve is heaven. That comes whenever we die or when Jesus returns. In the New Testament recording of the gospels, Jesus observes people then summons them to better choices. The two topics He discusses most are money and hell. That is an interesting combination. We need money for groceries but the pursuit can sideline us. Hell is our destination if we do not have faith in God’s plan to rescue us by sending Jesus. Heaven will be the elevated lifestyle we don’t deserve but will enjoy for all eternity but for one simple decision. Follow Jesus.
