What was he thinking? They thought the man walking on water was a ghost but it was Jesus. Peter was all in with joining the miracle. Don’t you know people like that who want to be in the middle of good things that they had no part in creating? I guess it is human nature. The realization of who Jesus actually was must have been incremental as demonstrated by Thomas after the resurrection. I don’t understand. If the disciples saw, with their own eyes, that Jesus could raise people from the dead – then who could doubt that Jesus would overcome those shackles himself?
I think that is the point. Jesus was above, beyond, and outside of ordinary and, clearly, unrestrained by natural laws that restrict you and me. Peter was thinking but his heart and mind was not believing. Doubt entered as soon as the facts were remembered. Faith is just that, “…the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”, Hebrews 11:1. A little faith went a long way for Peter – the only 100% human I know who overcame that “sinking feeling” for a moment. Here is to more moments of faith and not just the facts for the coming year. So much possibility!
