Borders Are Not Evil

Posted on May 3, 2024May 3, 2024 by Pam

There is an impressive account in the book or Joshua, chapter six, on the walled city of Jericho. I cannot remember any account in God’s word where any wall is referred to as evil. Some walls secured cities where the worshipers of idols resided. Felling the wall employed priests and musicians, but however it happened, the plan was to secure it for the followers of the one true God. The account of Rahab’s assistance is noteworthy as is her presence in the genealogy of Jesus. The wall was not evil but the people were. Jericho was flattened along with the wall. Chapter 6 in the Book of Nehemiah talks of building a wall. “So the wall was completed on the 25th of the month of Elul, in 52 days. And it came about when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations surroundings saw it, they lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God”, verses 15-16. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s wall. The enemies (not followers) of God opposed the build but God had commanded it. He always has a plan and a purpose. The exiles then return to Jerusalem, almost like the reestablishment of the nation of Israel in 1948. Ezra reads the Law to the People to remind them of their holy relationship to their creator. They celebrate and confess their sins (several chapters are dedicated to the recounting because there had been rebellion against God’s authority). Foreigners were excluded and expelled because God controls borders and walls for His purposes.

I listened to a podcast today about the source of current western morality and it was creepy. Although U.S. border policy was not addressed, my opinion is that the laws have worked. A sovereign nation has borders. They are not evil but people entering illegally are breaking the law. We are going soft vs going accurate. Neutrality seems to be popular. Being nice is giving illegal trespassers what they want. We are on a constant diet of skittles instead of the hard truth (meat) that any policy that harms the legal residents needs to be examined for what it is. The purpose of any country is not to save the world. Even the Bible teaches us to help widows and orphans but those who are believers in Jesus – maybe not the entire world? Those letters are written to the churches for the churches but we pull verses out of context to weaken our resolve that we are somehow saving people. We can help but only God saves. The whole world is full of lost and suffering people. I am not preventing anyone from having food and shelter but corrupt leaders in other nations are. Those walls and borders are meant to destroy the gospel and people suffer. If 40% of North Koreans are malnourished and they want to leave a country that persecutes Christians, those are evil leaders, pretending to be gods. How far the love and service to their people has fallen. We are not evil for keeping order. I am not trapping all of the goods for myself. We have a border crisis. If this offends you, it is not a detailed exegesis of what the Bible teaches but an opinion piece. Think globally but act locally?

Pam writes so that must make her a writer. Recently retired, she can now fill days with family, friends, missions, writing, creating, and showing up for whomever needs her. Pam loves the Lord and people. The Bible is God’s love letter to us (and who does not need more love) so she studies and writes some more.

Pam lives in the Pacific Northwest but was home-grown in Southern California. She attended San Jose Bible College and finished a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at UCLA. She became a teacher, then a Research and Development Chemist, then she built two successful real estate businesses in two states. Pam also pursued study at Fuller Theological Seminary and just completed six months serving in missions abroad.

Pam has two amazing children, married to two precious in-laws, and five sweet grandchildren. Pam is a gifted connector and communicator and the Northwest has the perfect climate for staying inside and writing – or baking! She has been writing since a wee one and is currently converting many years of blogging, by topic, into ten books. The first is a collection from 2011 titled, Beautiful Enough. The second is a yearly day-timer titled, Weekly Planner - Lessons in Life, Glory, and Grace. Number three is in progress with the working title, Christmas Today.

Ten facts about Pam in no particular order:

  1. On the team that developed an insulation for the Alaskan oil pipeline.
  2. Loves looking at homes, decorating, and has flipped five homes.
  3. Likes being tall.
  4. Films have helped define her vocabulary.
  5. Comes from Colorado tenement farmers with history traced to Wales.
  6. Was lost but now is found.
  7. Baking makes her happy – as does eating sweets with coffee, of course.
  8. She thinks mission work is the most important work in the world.
  9. The church started in Rome so she is learning Italian.
  10. Pam is a work in progress!
